The angle

Live dealer coverage is usually written about atmosphere. Atmosphere is the least verifiable thing in the room. We write about the rules instead, because rules are published and they decide the game. On a blackjack table: how many decks, whether the dealer stands on soft 17, whether surrender and doubling after a split are offered, and what a blackjack pays — a table paying 6 to 5 is a different game from one paying 3 to 2, whatever the studio looks like. On roulette: single zero or double zero, and how that shows in the house edge. On the game-show formats: the wheel layout, the multipliers, and how a bonus round is entered.

Around the rules we record the table minimum and maximum, the studio a table is broadcast from, the language it is dealt in, and whether a table runs continuously or on a schedule.

Method

Studio and operator documentation: the provider’s game rules, the table information panel, the operator’s lobby listing. The Australian position

Live dealer play is casino gaming, and casino gaming delivered online is a prohibited interactive gambling service under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. Providing it to a person in Australia is an offence, and no licence for it exists federally or in any state or territory. The same Act separately prohibits in-play betting on a sporting event once it has begun; what Australia does license is wagering on races and sport placed before the event starts, along with lotteries and keno, through state and territory regulators.

Land-based casinos are licensed by the states and are a genuine contrast — but a land-based licence has never authorised an online table, and nobody should read it that way.

The offence lies with the provider. The player is not prosecuted and is also not covered: no Australian consumer protection, no complaints body with power to recover funds, no BetStop coverage, and no arbiter for a disputed hand.
